The Interview - Dav Pilkey

Question and answer

What inspired you to start writing?

I've always had a vivid imagination and loved storytelling since I was a child. My inspiration came from a combination of reading classic novels like Pride and Prejudice and watching fantasy movies that transported me to other worlds. Writing became a way to create my own magical realms and share them with others.

Question and answer

Can you describe your writing process?

My writing process is a blend of structure and spontaneity. I start with a rough outline, noting the key plot points and character arcs. However, once I begin writing, I let the story take its own path. I write every morning with a cup of coffee by my side, aiming for 1,000 words a day, and edit in the evenings.

Question and answer

What’s the most challenging part of writing for you?

The hardest part for me is the editing process. After pouring my heart into a draft, it can be difficult to cut scenes or rewrite entire chapters. However, I've learned that this is where the magic happens, and it's worth the effort to make the story shine.

Question and answer

How do you develop your characters?

I treat my characters like real people. I write detailed backstories for them, even if most of it never makes it into the book. I think about their fears, dreams, and quirks, and this helps me create authentic, relatable characters that readers can connect with.

Question and answer

What’s your favorite book that you’ve written, and why?

My favorite is The Whispering Forest. It’s a deeply personal story that explores themes of loss and resilience, inspired by my own experiences. Writing it was therapeutic, and hearing from readers who found comfort in it has been incredibly rewarding.

Question and answer

How do you handle writer’s block?

When I hit a creative wall, I step away from my desk and do something completely unrelated, like going for a walk or baking. Sometimes, I’ll free-write about the problem I’m facing in the story. It helps me clear my mind and find a fresh perspective.

Question and answer

What do you hope readers take away from your books?

I hope my readers come away with a sense of hope and connection. Whether it’s through the characters’ journeys or the themes explored, I want them to feel inspired and comforted, knowing they’re not alone in their struggles.
